How To Fix 3 Common Plumbing Problems

|

Plumbing problems are bound to happen from time to time at home. While some of them are easy to fix yourself, some of them require a bit more expertise. By fixing the simple problems on your own, you will save a ton of money. In this blog post, we’ll go over how to fix the following:

  • Low water pressure

  • Slow draining sink

  • Running toilet

  • Jammed garbage disposal

Keep reading for easy DIY solutions for all of these everyday plumbing problems.

Low Water Pressure

The most common cause of low water pressure is typically due to faulty fixtures. In southern California, many homes have hard water running through their pipes, which means the water has more minerals in it. These minerals can get built up on the interior and exterior of the fixtures causing blockages and resulting in lower water pressure.

To fix this, soak an old cloth in vinegar and wrap it around the affected area or fill a plastic bag with ½ a cup of vinegar and let it soak for 2 to 3 hours. Then take an old toothbrush and gently scrub off the loosened deposits.

If this doesn’t resolve your low water pressure problems, then it might be time to call in a professional.

Slow Draining Sink

Clogs happen, as unfortunate and inconvenient as it is. Your immediate reaction might be to reach for that chemical drain cleaner. However, this can cause you a lot of future plumbing problems. Instead, try a mixture of 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar then pour it down your drain.

Don’t be alarmed by the fizzing you will likely see, it’s this reaction that will help to unclog your drain. Once the fizzing stops, wait 5 minutes and flush the drain with 2 quarts of hot water.

Running Toilet

There are several factors that can lead to a running toilet, but luckily, most of these can be fixed easily. Some of the causes may include:

  • A worn out or missing toilet flapper

  • A loose toilet fill valve

  • Leaky flush valve

In all of these cases, your best option would be to replace the damaged piece. If replacing the valve or flappers does not solve your problem, then it might be time to call in the professionals.
